The Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer (JANE)

By 2050, cancer cases are projected to increase by 77%, with the European Union expecting 3.7 million new cases by 2045. This growing prevalence is outpacing treatment advancements, leading healthcare to focus on providing better care for more patients. The EU launched Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP) in 2021, introducing 32 key actions and 10 flagship initiatives addressing all aspects of cancer care. One key initiative, the Joint Action on Networks of Expertise (JANE), is creating seven networks focused on complex cancers, palliative care, and personalized prevention.

The ONCODIR and JANE projects both represent critical steps forward in addressing the increasing global burden of cancer. Both initiatives prioritize multidisciplinary collaboration and the integration of new technologies to address rising cancer rates, particularly in underserved populations. Together, they support Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan by advancing personalized prevention and early detection strategies for cancer across the region.
